Krista Harris Fellowship Recipient Watching News Unfold

Business Administration student Prasad Ranay is halfway through a six week internship at CBC. He is the recipient of the 2010 Krista Harris Fellowship.

Halfway through his six week internship with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Saint Mary’s MBA student Prasad Ranay says he can already see how the experience is reshaping his future in business.

“It is an incredibly complex business with operational challenges ranging from technology and geography to culture and the ever present news deadline,” he said. “As I make my way through various departments, I’m learning about strategy and operational styles that I ‘m sure I will be able to apply to opportunities down the road.”

In early May Ranay was named the recipient of the 4th annual Krista Harris Fellowship. The fellowship was established in memory of Krista Harris to honour her outstanding contribution as a leader in both organizations.

Harris graduated from Saint Mary’s with a Bachelor of Commerce in the spring of 1987 and with the BIRKS Medal for the highest standing in the Faculty of Commerce. She held a variety of national and local positions at the CBC from 1994 to 2006, including regional director of operations for CBC Radio in the Maritimes. She passed away on May 28, 2006.

“Krista Harris was passionate about public broadcasting and played a vital role in positioning the CBC as a broadcast leader for the 21st Century, “says Richard Stursberg, Executive Vice-President of CBC English Services.

“We know that her leadership and dedication will live on by giving others the opportunity to work for Canada’s national broadcaster, serving the interests of Canadians everywhere.”

Born in India and raised in Bahrain, Ranay has worked in India, Singapore and the Middle East. He moved to Canada in September 2009. He is an engineer by training, but enrolled at Saint Mary’s after deciding he enjoyed the operations side of management in business.

While at CBC, he has focused on the operational side of the business by spending time with programming, transmission as well as sales and marketing.

“The cultural experience that goes with the job is very important to me. I’ve been fortunate to have international experience, but there is nothing like experiencing a country’s culture like working at its heart, the public broadcast system.”

Last year Ranay worked at Saint Mary's advancement services as a student caller for the university raising awareness of the latest happenings at Saint Mary’s and solicit support for improvement of university facilities.

The Krista Harris CBC Fellowship provides the recipient with a $2,000 bursary and a six week paid immersion at CBC in Halifax. A customized work program is developed to suit the leadership interests of the successful candidate each year.
