Dr. J. Colin Dodds, President of Saint Mary’s University, has once again been recognized as one Atlantic Canada’s top CEO’s.
Lauded by Atlantic Business Magazine Wednesday as a master juggler for serving as President and Vice Chancellor while still teaching finance courses, writing books, publishing research and penning a biweekly newspaper column, he was named one of the region’s Top 50 CEOs at a gala dinner held at the World Trade and Convention Centre.
It was the fifth time Dr. Dodds has appeared on the business magazine’s list of top CEOs, immediately qualifying him for entry into the magazine’s Hall of Fame. He was one of 11 CEO’s from across the region inducted into the Hall during the black tie event.
In a magazine article detailing each winners' accomplishments, Dr. Dodds said the Atlantic region may face huge challenges, particularly demographic, but its greatest advantage in an increasingly globalized and competitive environment “ is our public school system.”
He attributed much of his success to the team of people around him. He said there are tremendously talented leaders in the East Coast across many sectors, but there will always be room for more people to act as mentors.
Twenty eight of the 50 top chief executive officers in Atlantic Canada are from Nova Scotia, and of those, about half are Saint Mary’s University alumni or have a family connection to the university. See list
Dr. Dodds has headed Saint Mary’s since 2000. Under his leadership, the University has created a number of partnerships with universities around the world in countries like Russia and China. He has also worked with others in boosting community outreach projects locally, nationally and internationally.
Atlantic Business Editor Dawn Chafe said despite the fiscal blackout that marked much of global business for 2009, Atlantic Canada region shone with business integrity and accomplishment.
“When the world panicked, our leaders were calm. Where others quit, they persevered. When traditional markets failed, they found success elsewhere. And when thousands of others closed up shop and went home in defeat, this crowd kept the lights on and the economy humming.”
