Saint Mary's has Another World Champion

Lisa Jordan helped coach the U18 Canadian Women’s Hockey Team to a gold medal at the world championship held in early March in Chicago.

Coach Lisa Jordan has visited the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto many times.

The head of the Saint Mary's Women's Hockey Team is always delighted to see the trophies and scan the photos of winning teams for familiar faces. On her next visit she will have a new face to look for: her own.

Ms. Jordan was behind the bench as an assistant coach this past weekend as the U18 Canadian Women’s Hockey Team captured gold at the IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in Chicago.

“It’s a short term event. The women only come together for the week before the event, but the intensity is incredible,” she said. “You could feel the excitement building all week for the expected showdown between Canada and the U.S.”

When the showdown at Seven Bridges Ice Arena came, Canada found itself down 4-2 in the second period, but battled back to tie the game at the end of regulation play. It clinched victory with a goal 3:10 into the extra period.

Canada had taken home silver from the first two world championships, falling 5-2 to the United States at the inaugural tournament in Calgary, Alta., in 2008, and 3-2 in overtime to the U.S. last year in Füssen, Germany.

Ms. Jordan has been working with Hockey Canada for six years. She has been head coach of the Huskies for 13 years.

She said it is exhilarating to be able to call yourself a world champion and know your picture is going to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but the emotions are different than those she felt earlier this year guiding the Saint Mary’s team to the AUS Women’s Hockey title and then going on to compete in the CIS Championship Bronze Medal Game.

“Those games with the Huskies were the culmination of years of work. When you get to watch women grow and develop, that’s a satisfaction that stays with you for a lifetime.”

Ms. Jordan will get a medal and a world championship ring for the Chicago effort. She could have the medal in her office to show off today, but she opted to ensure members of the support staff were presented medals on the day of the championship in recognition of their contribution.

“I’ll get mine in the mail, that’s fine with me.”
