The Saint Mary’s brand will be front and centre Feb. 13 when the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia gathers for its annual CA Convocation at the World Trade and Metro Centre.
With four of the five new Fellows of Charted Accountants inductees holding Saint Mary’s degrees, the event is bound to have maroon and white overtones.
“On a proportional basis, this has to be one of our most impressive showings,” says Nicola Young, a Saint Mary’s accounting professor and a former chair of ICANS honours committee. “We’ve always been recognized as one of the top schools and these honours underscore that.”
The FCA distinction is awarded to long-standing members of ICANS who have rendered meritorious service to the profession or whose career achievement or achievements in the community have brought honour to the profession.
This year’s FCA inductees with Saint Mary’s degrees are R.B. Cameron, President & Chief Executive, Cameron Corporation Limited and Chairman & CEO, Maritime Steel and Foundries Limited, Dartmouth, Donald M. Flinn, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Halifax, Kirk D. Higgins, Managing Partner, WBLI Chartered Accountants, Bedford and Daniel J. McCarthy, Vice Chair, CIBC World Markets Inc., Toronto. The inductee without a Saint Mary's degree is John Nash, Partner, Nash Hannem & Associates, Sydney.
More than 30 Saint Mary’s grads who passed the 2009 national Uniform Evaluation (UFE) will also be recognized at the event.
The near sweep of CFA inductees follows on the heels of Saint Mary’s alumna Jane Roy being named the 2009 Ross L. Towler CA of the Year Award late in December.
Presented annually to a CA who embodies the spirit of community volunteerism, Ms. Roy was recognized for her volunteer leadership in creating Catapult -- a one week youth leadership camp that targets teenagers from across Nova Scotia who teachers believe to have exceptional leadership potential, but due to circumstance, may not be able to experience such an opportunity.
Roy’s commitment to the camp stretched from fundraising to recruiting inspirational speakers and experts from around the world to donate their time. She oversaw all the logistical elements in making this unique and special camp a reality.
“She put hundreds of hours into that effort,” says Ms. Young who remembers Roy’s dedication as a student. “She was a member of groups and societies. It was an exciting time and she was always involved in something.”
In addition to Catapult , judges also considered the cumulative actions of her volunteer contributions that have included her leadership of the Maritime Medical Care Challenge (war canoe race) that helped to raise over $1 million for the IWK Health Centre and her roles as the Founding Chair of the Provincial Autism Center and Founding Vice-Chair of the annual Autism Golf Ball.
“Clearly, Jane is very deserving of a CA of the Year Award. Her volunteer philosophy and commitment are outstanding and she is a great example of how our members continue to make volunteering an integral part of their careers,” says ICANS CEO and Executive Director, Michele Wood-Tweel, who is also the chair of the Saint Mary’s Board of Governors.
