Prize Winning Ideas: The Recent Nobels

What are the great ideas behind the 2008 Nobel Prizes? Why are they important to our world?

From the discovery of HIV to the resolution of world conflict, the winners of the 2008 Nobel Prizes are shaping our society and our future.

Find out more about the 2008 Nobel winners at this series of free 40-minute lectures presented Jan. 29, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 by distinguished professors at Saint Mary’s University.

The series begins Thursday, Jan. 29 with presentations about the Nobel Prizes for physics and chemistry, continues Thursday, Feb. 5 with presentations about the prizes for peace and medicine, and concludes Thursday, Feb. 12 with presentations about the prizes for literature and economics.

Nobel Prize in Physics

How Spontaneously Broken Symmetries in Subatomic Physics Have Shaped Our Universe  

Presented by Dr. Malcolm Butler, Dean of Science

Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Osamu Shimomura and the Discovery of Green Fluorescent Protein

Presented by Dr. Jason Clyburne, Department of Chemistry & Environmental Studies Program

February 5, 7 p.m.

Nobel Prize for Peace

The Role of Mediation in International Conflict Resolution

Presented by Bridget Brownlow, Conflict Resolution Advisor

Nobel Prize in Medicine

Discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Presented by Dr. Zhongmin Dong, Department of Biology

February 12, 7 p.m.

Nobel Prize in Literature

Jean-Marie Le Clézio, The Nomad of Francophone Literature

Presented by Dr. Joelle Cauville, Department of Modern Languages and Classics

Nobel Prize for Economics

Paul Krugman: Academic Scholar and Public Intellectual

Presented by Dr. Atul Dar, Department of Economics

All lectures will be held in the Scotiabank Conference Theatre of the Sobey Building beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be available at the start of the evening.
