Saint Mary’s to test emergency broadcast system

On Thursday, Dec. 18, Friday, Dec. 19 and Monday, Dec. 22, Saint Mary’s University will conduct a regular test of its emergency notification system.

At various times between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on these dates, speaker systems on campus will broadcast test messages to ensure the university’s emergency communication system is working properly. The test messages will be preceded by the words “This is a test.”

The emergency broadcast system consists of public address speakers in all main campus buildings and university residences, as well as external broadcast speakers positioned to reach all outside areas on campus. It is designed to immediately notify everyone on campus about emergency situations.

The university has distributed notices to houses in the surrounding neighbourhood to let people know the university will be testing the broadcast system. The university has also notified the local media as well as police and fire services to ensure the 911 Centre, the local Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) and all patrol officers are aware of the testing.

Saint Mary's always strives to ensure safety on its campus for the campus community, including visitors and neighbours. This testing is part of the university’s ongoing emergency preparedness and response plan, designed to help everyone be informed and prepared to act in times of emergency on campus.
