Media Release For Immediate Release October 24, 2008 Saint Mary's student from St. Lucia awarded Lucelec-Emera scholarship A Saint Mary’s student from St. Lucia has been awarded the first Lucelec-Emera scholarship. Sarah MacDonald, vice-president of Human Resources at Emera Inc, made the announcement yesterday, and it was reported internationally today in an online version of the St. Lucia Star newspaper. According to the report, Emera representatives, along with faculty of Saint Mary’s University, reviewed applications submitted by students from St. Lucia who are attending the institution in the fall and came to the unanimous decision that the award should go to Amelia St Ange. “We are pleased to be able to contribute to Amelia’s education,” said Ms. MacDonald in the newspaper article. “Amelia is a stellar student and a dedicated athlete. Her chosen sport is tennis and she has competed at a national level.” St Ange was awarded a Santamarian Scholarship by Saint Mary’s based on her academic grades and the strength of her application. Her results in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exams placed her in the top three on the island. The Emera Scholarship for St. Lucia residents offers one renewable award of$5,000 up to four years of study to those who are permanent residents of St. Lucia. This scholarship also includes participation in three co-op work terms (three months each) over a three year period- one with Emera (Halifax) and two with Lucelec (St. Lucia). The scholarship is open to a graduating high school student who is a permanent resident of St. Lucia entering into Engineering, Science or the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University.
