Saint Mary’s professors honoured at CMC-Atlantic Canada awards night

CMC-Atlantic Canada celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 4 with a packed house at Window’s Restaurant at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax. The Annual President’s Dinner and Awards night held special moments for two Saint Mary’s University professors from the Sobey School of Business, as Gord Fullerton and John Chamard were awarded honorary memberships for “having performed distinguished service to the profession and science of Management.”

Fullrerton is the Associate Dean for Masters Programs with the Sobey School of Business. He is an Assistant Professor of Marketing with specializations in services and relationship marketing. Chamard holds the CIBC teaching Chair for Entrepreneurship and Venture Development and was responsible for establishing the first Canadian PhD program for Entrepreneurship at Saint Mary’s University. Both men also sit on the Joint Advisory Committee that oversees the ongoing relationship between Saint Mary’s University and CMC-Canada.

In 2002, Saint Mary’s was the first university in Canada to create an industry-recognized MBA with a concentration in Management Consulting. A memorandum of understanding between the University and the Association was first inked in April 2002 and stated that the key focus of the new program was to be the educational preparation for the Certified Management Consulting (CMC) designation.

Paul Dixon (currently the Registrar at Saint Mary’s), who was the Dean of Commerce at the time and a driving force behind the Management Consulting concentration program, was recognized as an Honorary Member at the President’s Dinner and Awards Night in May 2002.

Students graduating from the Sobey School of Business MBA with a concentration in Management Consulting have undertaken the flagship CMC-Canada program, the Essentials of Management Consulting, and training in the Code of Professional Conduct along with all the six functional areas of business management, a course in project management and two courses in interpersonal skills. As such, they are well on their way to achieving the CMC designation, having only to complete their three years full-time management consulting experience, submit their assignment summaries and successfully pass the comprehensive exam.

Two recent graduates of the concentration, Shannon Murphy and Raye Lemke were also in attendance at the dinner at the World Trade Centre.

CMC-Atlantic Canada is an affiliated provincial Institute of CMC-Canada (Canadian Association of Management Consultants), which fosters excellence and integrity in the management consulting profession. CMC-Canada administers, and its provincial Institutes confer, the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation in Canada. The Association and its members advocate for the CMC designation and are dedicated to advancing the profession and delivering the benefits of those efforts to the client community. CMC-Canada is a founding member of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI.)
