Dr. David F. Sobey Appointed Chancellor of Saint Mary’s University

One of Canada’s most widely respected business leaders has been named the new Chancellor of Saint Mary’s.

Dr. David F. Sobey is the Chairman Emeritus of Sobeys Inc.

Dr. Sobey will begin his new role at the University’s Spring Convocation, which will be held on May 23, 2008. He will serve as the Chancellor until May 2010 and will act as a key ambassador and advocate for the University, and sit as an ex-officio member on its Board of Governors.

“We are proud to have a leader like Dr. David Sobey serve as Chancellor of Saint Mary’s,” says Dr. J. Colin Dodds. “He brings a large number of qualities and experience to this new role and we are thrilled he has accepted this position."

Dr. Sobey has been a tireless supporter of Saint Mary’s over the last three decades. In the mid-1980s he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the University. From 1993 to 1998 he chaired Saint Mary's Building on Strength capital campaign which raised in excess of $24 million for various initiatives at the University, including the creation of the Sobey Building - today home to the University's business school.

Dr. Sobey was awarded the degree of Doctor of Commerce (honoris causa) from Saint Mary's University in 1991.
