Robert (Bob) Shaw Named Top Leader in Turning Points Hall of Leadership
Robert (Bob) Shaw (BComm. '68) will join a small and select group of individuals when he is posthumouslyinducted into the Saint Mary's University “Turning Points Hall of Leadership" in April 2008.
“Bob defined leadership. He was a leader,” said Paul O’Hearn (BComm ‘82), one of the founders of the Turning Points in Leadership Dinner and former president of the University’s Alumni Association (2005 to 2007). “We are honoured to present his family with the Award as our recognition to one of the great leaders in our region.”
Shaw graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Mary’s University in the spring of 1968. As a Chartered Accountant, he was recognized as a Fellow by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Through his work in community development as President, Chairman and Director of The Shaw Group Limited, Shaw was instrumental in building housing projects in communities across Halifax Regional Municipality. He additionally volunteered as Chair and Director of numerous foundations and organizations including the Nova Scotia Hospital Foundation, The Abilities Foundation and the Metro United Way Corporate Campaign. He was also past President for both the Canadian and the Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association.
Shaw was an important member of the Saint Mary’s community. As a student he served as president of SMUSA (Saint Mary's University Students' Association) and went on to be a member of the University’s Board of Governors; President of the Alumni Association; Chair of the Building on Strength Capital Campaign; and a member of the Business Development Centre board.
While a student at Saint Mary’s, he met his wife Gretchen on campus while she was working with Edmund Morris,acting President t of Saint Mary’s. Their son, Rob, also attended Saint Mary’s and earned his Bachelor of Commerce in 1992. Mirroring his father, Rob also met his wife, Shari Mallory-Shaw (BA ‘92, BComm '94, MBA ‘07), on campus.
The Shaw family has established the Robert (Bob) Shaw Commerce Scholarship; the Robert (Bob) Shaw MBA Scholarship and the Bob Shaw MBA Case Competition. The Shaw family’s remarkable support will ensure that generations of students will have endless opportunities for success regardless of financial limitations.
Reflecting on how Shaw was selected as this year’s recipient of the Turning Points award, O’Hearn said: “The Turning Points Hall of Leadership acknowledges the leadership at Saint Mary's University; leadership in business; and leadership in our communities;—all values Bob clearly embodied.”
The sold out Turning Points in Leadership 2008 will be hosted by Mr. Robert P. Kelly, Chief Executive Officer of The Bank of New York Mellon, a global financial services growth company with 40,000 employees, operating in 34 countries and serving institutions, corporations and high-net-worth individuals in more than 100 markets worldwide. Kelly, a Halifax native, earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University’s Sobey School of Business in 1975 and, in recognition of his numerous achievements, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce degree in 1997.
Shaw passed away in 2005, leaving behind a legacy reflected in his many career achievements and charitable activities. The Shaw family will accept the award at the Turning Points in Leadership Dinner to be held at Saint Mary’s University on Thursday, April 17, 2008.
The Turning Points Hall of Leadership was established last year and its inaugural inductees were Dr. David F. Sobey, Chairman Emeritus, Sobeys Inc., and Mr. Paul D. Sobey, President and CEO, Empire Company Limited.
