Media Release For Immediate Release February 18, 2008 These winners are real good with the pen It’s official, as the judges for the Saint Mary’s University Academic Writing Awards have announced the Fall 2007 winners of this competitive award. “This is the third time we've run the awards, and we received the greatest number of entries to date,” says Julie-Ann Vincent, Director of the Saint Mary’s Writing Centre. The Centre is located on the main level of the Burke Building. “The decision to vote on winners becomes harder each time as we receive top-notch submissions,” she adds. Students can submit papers with the approval of their course professors, or faculty members can suggest that particular students enter. The prize is $100 and an awards entry on the student’s transcript. Runners-up receive $50. The judges this year included Vincent and Heather Sanderson (Information Literacy Librarian) for all categories. The other judges in specific categories were Dr. Nicole Neatby (History) and Dr. Rohini Bannerjee (French) for Arts, Dr. Jeremy Lundholm (Biology) for Science, and Dr. Karen Lightstone (Accounting) for Business. The following is the list of winners: Best Upper-Level Arts Paper Alex Colgan (“Marx and Hegel: The Premise Not Taken” – Political Science) Runner Up, Upper-Level Arts Paper Phoebe Smith (“Simulation Report” – Political Science) Best First-Year Arts Paper Liz MacKenzie (“The External World of Skepticism” – Philosophy) Best Upper-Level Business Paper Barbara Capes (“Requested Report on the Best Region in Nova Scotia for Co-Production: Glace Bay” – Marketing) Runner Up, Upper-Level Business Paper Skylar Loder (“Co-op Work Term Report” – Co-op) Best Undergraduate Science Paper Kendra Matheson (“The Toppling of Giants: Paradigms in the Understanding of the South American Plio-Pleistocene Extinction” – Geology) Congratulations to all winners!
