SMU Professors Honoured by Destination Halifax

Last evening, in the Windows Restaurant at the World Trade and Convention Centre (WTCC), Destination Halifax announced the 2006 Ambassador Club Achievement Award Honorees.

This year’s list of winners includes two professors from Saint Mary’s — Dr. Peter Twohig, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Atlantic Canada Studies, and Dr. Joseph Hahn, Astronomy and Physics Department.

Both were honoured in recognition of their individual and personal effort which resulted in Halifax being chosen as the venue for a meeting, conference or special event in 2006.

Earlier this year , Dr. Twohig organized the American Association for the History of Medicine Conference, and Dr. Hahn organized the American Astronomical Society Conference. Both these conferences attracted a large number of people to Halifax, which is a true benefit to the local economy.

“As a cultural, educational, scientific and medical hub, Halifax continues to attract regional, national and international meetings & conventions. Many groups choose to convene here as a direct result of enthusiastic and hard working supporters of the destination. Pride of place is a common thread uniting all the honorees. The Ambassador Club identifies these individuals and celebrates their outstanding contributions to the prosperity of Halifax,” states Ms. Patricia Lyall, President & CEO of Destination Halifax.

Destination Halifax is the dedicated tourism marketing organization for the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). It is a public/private partnership operating with the mandate to dramatically increase tourism revenues on a year round basis.
