Sobey MBA Students Get Scoop on Owning a Small Business

Boris Mirtchev (BSc '96 and MBA '99): “Remember, hard work gets you places and gets you the kind of results you desire to earn a successful living.”

This afternoon, students in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program learned first hand about what it takes to be a small business owner.

Boris Mirtchev (BSc ’96 and MBA ’99), who is a graduate of the Sobey MBA program at Saint Mary’s, conducted a talk on owning a small business to first year MBA students.

“Owning a business is a big commitment in life,” he said during his lecture this afternoon. “But if owning a business is something you want to do, then go for it.”

He indicated that being your own boss is truly rewarding.

“The first few years of owning your own business is hard, but the key thing is to just keep at it; never give up,” he said. “Remember, hard work gets you places and gets you the kind of results you desire to earn a successful living.”

Mirtchev is the founder of a number of Halifax establishments including Hamachi House, Hamachi Steak House and Ekaterina’s Fine World Chocolates at Bishops Landing. He recently opened Rogi Orazio, which is now dubbed as Halifax’s newest hot spot specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. He is also the President and CEO of MIC Consulting INC., a consulting firm that specializes in business development and marketing/communications for a number of businesses worldwide.

Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a vibrant Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
