United Way Campaign at SMU Gets Big Tug from Students, Faculty and Staff

Dr. Jeff Power (right), a professor of accounting, accepts this year's trophy as his team beat the Football Huskies in the tug-of-war match. Presenting the trophy to him is Jeff Lohnes, Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Saint Mary’s University Students’ Association (SMUSA).

The United Way Campaign at Saint Mary’s University was officially launched at the Tower this afternoon and droves of students, faculty and staff showed up to show their support.

This year’s kick-off was a truly memorable event and over 100 people turned out for the good cause. This year's goal is to raise $31,000.00.

There were a number of people who people who spoke at today’s kick-off event, including: Ken MacAuley, United Way Representative; Annie Baird, Learning Disability Association; Dr. J. Colin Dodds, President of Saint Mary’s; and, Keith Hotchkiss, Director of Student Services at Saint Mary’s.

Following the talks today, there was a tug-of-war contest (athletic teams versus the faculty and staff) on the field in Huskies Stadium. Dr. Dodds was the captain of the athletic teams. After everyone flexed their muscles for a good cause, the faculty/staff team came out the winners.

Jeff Lohnes, Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Saint Mary’s University Students’ Association (SMUSA) presented Dr. Jeff Power, who is a professor of accounting, with this year’s trophy. Dr. Power accepted the trophy on behalf of the faculty/staff team.

Everyone also enjoyed the barbecue that was held following the tug-of-war.

The 2006 United Way Campaign Team at Saint Mary’s were recognized at today’s event. Team members include: Pat Bishara, Information Officer, Public Affairs Department; Krista Armstrong, Public Affairs Assistant; Helen Dolan, Public Affairs Officer; Sarah Morris, Student Services; Kathleen Jewell, Residence Office; Clay Fowler, Director of Residence; Keith Hotchkiss, Director of Student Services; Paul Turgeon, Facilities Management; Tony Arab, Facilities Management; Julee Adams, Chemistry Department; Ken MacCauly, United Way Representative; Jonah Taussig, Athletics and Recreation Department; and Adrienne McCarthy, Institutional Analysis and Planning (External Affairs).

Aramark Catering and the Facilities Management Department also received a big round of applause for ensuring that today’s event was a true success.

Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a vibrant Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
