The Language Centre
To meet the growing demand for people who can teach English as a Second or Foreign Language, we at Saint Mary's have designed a training program with two components: classroom study and practical experience.
The certificate program is a practical introduction to the techniques, methodologies and instructional resources used to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EAL) to children and adults.
The Overview Course is for:
Students who want knowledge and skills in teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language;
Teachers who want the necessary skills to work with linguistically and culturally diverse students in their mainstream or ESL/EFL classes;
People with an undergraduate degree who want some training in TESL/TEFL before going overseas.
Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate their competence in English by submitting one of the following:
a) A minimum iBT 72 overall with a minimum score of 15 in each area
b) A minimum score of 50 on the CAEL (no subtest below 40)
c) A minimum score of 6.0 on the IELTS with no individual skill under 5.5
d) High school graduation from a high school in Canada, or
e) A minimum overall score of 71 on the Oxford Online Placement Test
The minimum of an accredited high school diploma with at least an overall average of 70% in the final year is required for acceptance into this course.
