Confucius Institute Scholarship 

In order to cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarships” program, entrusting Confucius Institutes located in other countries (independent setup of classes) and some HSK exam locations (hereinafter referred to as “nominee institutions”) to nominee students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries to qualify for the scholarship for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).

Category, Scholarship Content & Eligibility

Application is open to applicant who owns a non-Chinese citizenship, aged between 16 and 35, in good health condition, (Applicant is currently working in a Chinese language teaching position shall not exceed the age limit of 45. Undergraduate student shall not exceed the age limit of 20).

All categories of scholarships offer both full scholarship and partial scholarship, for details refer to “Scholarship Coverage, Criteria and Academic Assessment”. Application qualifications are:

  • Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Students
    This category is intended for student whose study starts in September 2017 and provides a sponsorship for no more than 2 academic years. Full scholarship applicant should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 5); Partial scholarship applicant should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 5). HSKK scores should all pass intermediate levels. Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred.

  • Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Students
    This scholarship is intended for student whose study starts in September 2017 and provides a sponsorship for no more than 4 academic years. Full scholarship applicant should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 4); Partial scholarship applicant should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 4). HSKK scores should all pass intermediate levels. Confucius Institute (classroom) registered student is preferred.

  • Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students
    This scholarship is intended for student whose study starts in September 2017 and provides a sponsorship for 11 months. International students who are still studying in China after January 1 2017 are not accepted.
    • This category provides Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language (TCSOL) courses and a full sponsorship for in-service Chinese teachers who are coming to study in China and are preparing to obtain Master in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language (MTCSOL). Applicant should have a minimum score of 270 in HSK Test (Level 3) (Training objective is 180 in HSK Test (Level 5)), as well as HSKK score.
    • This category provides Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy Advanced Courses to student or scholar who wishes to pursue Chinese translation and sinology research. Applicant should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 4), and HSKK score should pass intermediate level. A partial or full scholarship is determined based on nationality, order of application and Chinese skill levels.
  • Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students
    This scholarship is intended for student whose study starts in September 2017 or March 2018 and provides a sponsorship for 5 months. Applicant should have no prior experience of studying in China.
    • This category provides TCSOL courses and a full sponsorship for in-service Chinese teachers who are coming to study in China, Confucius Institute (Classroom) students and students with Chinese major, who wish to pursue Bachelor in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language (BTCSOL). Applicant should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 3), including HSKK score.
    • This category provides Chinese medicine and Tai Chi Culture Research courses and a full sponsorship to those who wish to spread the Chinese culture and have the relevant professional foundation. Applicant must provide HSK score report.
    • This category provides Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy courses to student or scholar whose major is related to Chinese communication. Applicant should have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 3), including HSKK score. A partial or full scholarship is determined based on nationality, order of application and Chinese skill levels.

  • Scholarship for Four-Week Study Students
    This scholarship is intended for student whose study starts in July 2017 or December 2017 and provides a full sponsorship for 4 weeks. Applicant must provide HSK score report with no prior experience of studying in China.
    • This category provides TCSOL courses for Chinese teachers who are coming to study in China
    • This category provides Chinese medicine and Tai Chi Culture Research courses to Confucius Institute registered students and teachers
    • This category provides “Chinese Language and Chinese Family Experience” study and practice course to Confucius Institute (Classroom) student group (within 10-15 people)

 “Chinese Bridge” (Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students) Winners who have been awarded the 2016 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” can apply for admission according to the scholarship specified in the certificate. For details regarding professional training programs or courses offered, please consult the host institution. The host institution has the right to request an interview as part of the admission requirements, and please provide proof other than the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application List”. Please refer to the "Confucius Institute Scholarship Annual Evaluation Method" and accept the assessment at the end of the first term.

Login to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (Cis.chinese.cn) to read about recommending institutions and host institutions; online submission of application materials, receive application process updates, assessment and scholarship review results; winners can confirm the procedures of studying in China with the host institutions and print Scholarship Certificates online; the student statutes needs to be registered online to received the Confucius Institute Scholarship.

Hanban will complete the scholarship review two months before enrollment.

Appendix 1:

 

Confucius Institute Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full scholarship and partial scholarship. Full scholarship covers tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (except four weeks study program) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses; partial scholarship covers tuition fee, accommodation fee, and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

  1. Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide teaching, management, Chinese language proficiency tests (HSK/HSKK), and cultural and social activities for scholarship holders.
  2. Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions which should provide scholarship holders with free dormitory rooms (usually double rooms). For those who live off campus with the permission of host institutions are entitled to accommodation allowance from host institutions on by month or by quarter. The allowance criteria are RMB700 per person on monthly basis.
  3. Living allowance is granted by the host institutions on monthly basis. The allowance criteria per person are:

* BTCSOL, One-Academic-Year Study, One-Semester Study: RMB2,500 per month
* MTCSOL: RMB3,000 per month

  • Enrollment status is based on semesters of host institutions.
  • Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance to relevant regulations on international students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. The insurance fee per person is RMB100 for the four-week study students, RMB400 for the one-semester study students, and RMB800 per year for one-Academic-Year study or more.
  • The registration reports of the old and new students, reports for the cancellation of the scholarship qualification, the suspension of the scholarship living expenses, the purchase of the scholarship insurance certificate and other materials shall be reported to the Hanban Scholarship office within 30 days after each semester starts.

3.2   Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the admission month, are entitled to the full allowance of that month. Students, who are enrolled after the 15th of that month, are only entitled to half of the allowance. The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month later upon confirming the graduation status by host institutions.

3.3   During the study, for any students who is absent from China of personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding legal holidays), the allowance will be suspended during absence.

3.4   Allowance will be terminated in case of schooling suspension or dropping out for personal reasons.

Appendix 2:

Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarships

Recommending institutions and host institutions should examine the completeness, validity and accuracy of applicant’s name, nationality and permanent address on the passport. If the following documents are not in Chinese or English version, notarization documents should be provided.

  1. For all applicants
  2. A scanned copy of the passport photo page. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
  3. Scanned score reports of the HSK, HSKK (valid for 2 years).
  4. Recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending institutions (please provide objective comments on the applicant, including whether the applicant is a student of Confucius Institute or other identity. Chinese language teachers shall submit an employment verification letter and a reference letter provided by the institutes they work for.)

 

  1. For degree scholarship program applicants
  2. Certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation), and an official transcript.
  3. Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students and Scholarship for “1-Academic-Year Study + MTCSOL” students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide an employment agreement or related documents with the designated teaching institution are preferred.
