1)The course might NOT be offered if the number of registrants  is less than 8. Once a term has begun, you can withdraw from a course up until the end of the first week of classes and be refunded 90% of your total tuition. After this date, refunds will NOT be issued.

Practical Mandarin

(ONLY open to SMU faculty and staff)

Prerequisite: None

This course is tailored in particular for SMU faculty and staff members, featuring the mixture of leaning of some basic Mandarin and understanding of some cultural elements that would help to enhance learners’ abilities in communicating better with people of Chinese cultural background.

The Practical Mandarin course will include following modules:

  • Language Module: Saying hello and goodbye
  • Language Module: Addressing people appropriately
  • Cultural Tips: Introduction to Chinese Names & Families
  • Language Module: Making greetings
  • Language Module: Making phatic expressions
  • Cultural Tips: Educational Systems in China
  • Language Module: Apologizing
  • Language Module: Asking prices
  • Cultural Tips: Traditional Core Values in in China

 Course Time:5:00pm~6:30pm

Mandarin for Beginners

Prerequisite: None

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • use the sound system of pinyin
  • make greetings in Chinese
  • tell your name to others,  and ask about others ‘ names
  • introduce your classmates
  • recognize 20 simple Chinese characters

        Relevant cultural tips will be provided  throughout the course.

Course Time: 6:30pm~8:00pm

Course Fee:

$300 including tax ( general public)
$180 including tax (students, SMU faculty and staff)
The fee includes text books and other teaching materials.

Mandarin I

Prerequisite:your score of  
 is higher than 120. ‌If your score is lower than 120, we suggest that you take Mandarin for Beginners

 Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to

  • understand and use very simple Chinese words and phrases
  • meet basic needs for communication and
  • possess the ability to further your Chinese language studies.

        Relevant cultural tips will be provided  throughout the course.

Topics will include but not limited to Colors, likes and dislikes, professions, pets, age etc.

Course Time: 6:30pm~8:00pm

Course Fee:

$300 including tax ( general public)

Mandarin Ⅱ

PrerequisiteYour score of  
 is higher than 120. If your score is lower than 120, we suggest that you take Mandarin I.

 In this course, students will learn how to use Chinese to:

  • understand and use over 200 Chinese characters and phrases
  • use and understand practical daily language
  • describe & express simple ideas in Chinese
  • read short Chinese articles
  • possess the ability to further your Chinese language studies

Topics will include but not limited to:

  • asking for and giving directions
  • borrowing & returning things
  • comparing and contrasting different things
  • requesting time off
  • describing time, place and means
  • describing the state of actions or things
  • granting & refusing requests
  • asking about prices and negotiating with the vendors

          Relevant cultural tips will be provided  throughout the course.

Course Time: 6:30pm~8:00pm

Mandarin III

PrerequisiteYour score of  
 is higher than 180. If your score is lower than 180, we suggest that you take Mandarin II.


In this course, students will learn how to use Chinese to:

  • understand and use over 500 Chinese characters and phrases
  • communicate fluently and generally handle complex language well
  • search for and read common articles
  • possess the ability to further your Chinese language studies

        Relevant cultural tips will be provided  throughout the course.

Course Time: 6:30pm~8:00pm

Course Fee:

Instructor Introduction

Dr. Xun Li (Ph. D. in Chinese Literature)
Dr. Li is a Chinese teacher certified by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters). He is professionally trained as Mandarin Chinese instructor for non-native learners.

 

Ms. Weilisi ( Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Ethnic Minorities Language and Literature(Mongolian and Chinese Bilingual))

Ms. Weilisi is a Chinese teacher certified by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters). She is professionally trained as Mandarin Chinese instructor for non-native learners.

 

Ms. Jie Gao (Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language)
Ms. Gao is a Chinese teacher certified by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters). She is professionally trained as Mandarin Chinese instructor for non-native learners.
