The Alderman Graham Downey Bursary
To honour the memory of a natural leader with a passion for serving the citizens of Halifax, the family and friends of Graham Leo Downey, Sr. have worked with Saint Mary’s University to establish a financial award in support of African-Nova Scotian students who have graduated from a Nova Scotia high school and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to residents of Halifax County.
The Alderman Graham Downey Bursary pays tribute to Halifax’s first African-Nova Scotian Councilor and Deputy Mayor. A caring politician and consummate Alderman, Graham Leo Downey, Sr. served with distinction on Halifax City Council from 1974 to 2000. He passed away on August 30, 2015 at the age of 76.
