If you’re interested in pursuing an education program, you’ll find many opportunities at Saint Mary's University. We offer undergraduate courses in the liberal study of education. You can take these courses as electives to complement your Arts, Business, or Science degree, or as professional development courses for those holding Nova Scotia Bridging Teacher’s Certificates. In addition, as home to the region’s largest centre for Teaching English as a Second Language, Saint Mary’s University offers teacher-training at a number of levels.
Education Connection: Teacher Certification Access Program
Your undergraduate university experience at Saint Mary's University will provide a strong foundation to lead you into a Bachelor of Education program, should you wish to pursue a career in this field. Many Saint Mary’s graduates pursue their Bachelor of Education at various universities across Canada or internationally. Some graduates continue to the University of Maine at Presque Isle, in Presque Isle, Maine, USA, which is made accessible through a connection between the two institutions. Saint Mary's University and the University of Maine at Presque Isle have an education connection that will enable you to earn a dual certificate in teaching for Nova Scotia and Maine while studying in the United States. This program provides many benefits, including:
- International experience
- Canadian students will be charged the New England/Maritime tuition rate at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, which is lower than the rate charged to American students from outside New England
- Guaranteed admission to the University of Maine at Presque Isle for all qualified applicants
- Practice teaching may be completed in many locations including Nova Scotia
To pursue your teacher certification through the connection between Saint Mary's University and the University of Maine at Presque Isle, you must complete your undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s with at least 90 credit hours in arts and science courses, which include undergraduate courses required for teacher certification in Maine and Nova Scotia. You will also complete 15 credit hours of Education courses at Saint Mary’s, followed by two semesters of course work in Maine and one semester of practice teaching in Maine, Nova Scotia, Ontario, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island.

Certificate and Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language

Master of Education (TESL)
Saint Mary’s University works collaboratively with Mount Saint Vincent University to offer a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language. The courses in this program which are taught at Saint Mary’s will provide you with an introduction to the principles and practices of second or foreign language teaching and are suitable for inclusion in Integrated Programs for teacher professional development.
