Single Student Housing

‌Saint Mary's University has three furnished Residence buildings on campus for both men and women: Loyola Residence, Edmund Rice Residence and Vanier House. Loyola and Rice Residences are high rise buildings that form a prominent part of the University landscape.

They are located within one city block of the picturesque south end of Halifax, just minutes away from both the centre of downtown Halifax and the historic beauty of ocean-front Point Pleasant Park. For a list of Residence fees please visit our Residence FAQs.

The Ignatius Loyola Residence

Loyola Residence is a 22-storey high-rise, housing 434 students, with a mixture of same gender and co-ed floors. Each floor has a common lounge and four suites containing four single rooms and one double room with shared (but private) washrooms. The double rooms are approximately 10 x 14 feet, while the single rooms are approximately 11 x 8 feet in size.

A majority of classes are in Loyola Academic which is below and annexed to the Loyola Residence. Therefore, your classes are just a short elevator ride away.

Vanier Residence

Vanier is a low-rise building housing 224 students (same gender and co-ed floor) in four separate houses. Each floor in Vanier consists of a common lounge and three suites - each containing two double rooms and two single rooms with shared washroom facilities. The double rooms are approximately 10 x 14 feet, while the single rooms are approximately 8 x 11 feet in size.

Small residence, big community. Vanier House, being the smallest of the three residences, has a great community atmosphere. Comprised of all-female and co-ed floors.

Rooms are arranged in three suites and converge on a central foyer, where the lounge is located. The lounge on each floor is an area where you can socialize - it's much like a living room.

All rooms in Vanier and Loyola contain:

  •
SingleHousing2Closet with sufficient space
  • Windows with drapes
  • Desk with a built-in hutch with shelves, vertical CPU sling, slide-out keyboard tray and a light
  • Desk Chair
  • Waste Basket
  • Nightstand with two drawers
  • Wooden, captain-style, single bed with a coil-spring mattress

Edmund Rice Residence

Rice is a 17-storey apartment-styled residence. Some apartments contain two double rooms with a shared kitchen, bathroom and living/dining area; other apartments contain three rooms (super-single or single) with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

Rice is the only residence that does not require a meal plan, though you can purchase a plan if you desire. Many students like the appeal of being able to cook their own food.

Rice is a great place for students who want independence, with the convenience of living on campus. You’re still just minutes from your classes! Apartments are a great place where you can relax and socialize in a self-contained environment.

All rooms in Rice contain:

  • Closet with sufficient space
  • Windows with drapes
  • Wooden, captain-style, single bed with a coil-spring mattress; or a wooden, double bed with a coil-spring mattress
  • Desk with a built-in hutch with shelves, vertical CPU sling, slide-out keyboard tray and a light

We are pleased to announce that Saint Mary's University Residences and campus are tobacco-free.
