Places to visit Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada: One of Canada's most visited national historic sites, the Citadel features exhibits, audio-visual presentations, guided tours, the noon gun, and the 78th Highland Regiment. Admission is charged from May 7th to October 31st. Citadel Hill is open from 9am to 5pm daily.
Pier 21 National Historic Site of Canada: The newly restored award-winning National Historic site tells the stories of over one million immigrants, war brides, displaced children, and military personnel who passed through its doors between 1928 and 1971. Now Canada's last surviving ocean immigration shed, it offers a dramatic exploration of a critical part of our heritage, through interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations and activities for all ages. A research centre, café and gift shop are on site. Admission is charged; group rates available.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic: Dive into Atlantic Canada's maritime history in the heart of the historic Halifax waterfront. Experience the life of a sailor, learn of the province's ship-building heritage or uncover the meaning behind colourful ship flags. Explore the museum's exhibits and galleries, including North Atlantic Convoys, Titanic, the Halifax Explosion, the Days of Sail, the Age of Steam, etc. Visitors are also able to explore Canada's first hydrographic vessel, CSS Acadia, which is located at dockside (behind the museum) during the summer. Admission is charged.
George's Island National Historic Site of Canada: The Island's fortifications are currently undergoing restoration by Parks Canada; therefore, this historic site is not open to the public. If you take the Halifax/Dartmouth ferry, and look toward the harbour entrance you will see the island. It is the nearest island with the small lighthouse on the side and has played a key role in the harbour's defence system for almost 200 years.
The Old Burying Ground: A designated National Historic Site and registered Provincial Heritage Property. The first grave was dug the day after English settlers arrived on June 21, 1749. The land was set aside as a "common burial ground" outside the stockade of the new fortified town of Halifax. This site is a visible expression of all that Halifax witnessed in its first 100 years. Free admission, donations are welcome.
Alexander Keith's Nova Scotia Brewery: One of the oldest working breweries in North America, where citizens of Halifax escort back in time to the year 1863. Learn how Mr. Keith makes his famous beer, sample some ale, and listen to fun stories and toe-tapping songs in the Stag's Head Tavern. Admission charged.
Casino Nova Scotia: Located on the Halifax waterfront, with over 750 ways to play, from blackjack to poker to new Tito slot machines. Recent changes include new dining options, free live entertainment, new games and an atmosphere for excitement. Open 24/7 except for a select number of holidays. Free admission but must 19 or older and have government-issued ID.
Discovery Centre: Nova Scotia's hands-on science centre is dedicated to making science fun for all ages. Interactive exhibits allow for experimentation and individual discovery. Visit the bubble room, spin on the rotating chair, or experiment with magnets and see optical illusions. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for your visit. Admission charged.
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia: Along with temporary exhibitions, Atlantic Canada's largest fine arts museum exhibits more than 11,000 works in a permanent collection; historic and contemporary Nova Scotian. Canadian and international art is on display, as is an acclaimed collection of folk art. Admission charged.
Point Pleasant Park: Only minutes from downtown, this magnificent 186-acre park covers the southern tip of the Halifax peninsula, jutting into the mouth of the harbour. Features include extensive walking trails, picnic area, canteen, and the ruins of several forts. Open daily from 6am to midnight.
The Public Gardens: The finest original formal Victorian Public Garden in North America. Enjoy historic fountains, statuary, a natural pond system, and summer Sunday afternoon band concerts set among colourful flower beds and magnificent specimen trees. Free admission.
Saint Paul's Anglican Church: Founded in June 1749, St. Paul's is the oldest Protestant church in Canada and Britain's first overseas cathedral, originally service settlements from Newfoundland to Ontario. The burial vault holds the remains of the illustrious British colonials of the period. The Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917, is memorialized in the wooden sill embedded in the wall over the memorial doors. Guided tours in the summer. Donations are welcome.
Peggy's Cove: According to legend, Peggy's Cove was named after the only survivor of a schooner that ran aground and sank in 1800. The first Peggy's Cove Lighthouse was a wooden structure that acted as a navigational aid from the water, as well as providing living quarters for the lighthouse keeper and his family. This new structure is made from concrete and reinforced steel, and has weathered through every storm that Mother Nature has sent our way. Peggy's Cove offers an outstanding look at the Atlantic Ocean with crashing waves and many rocks.
Historic Properties: Three city blocks of Canada's oldest surviving group of waterfront warehouses and some of North America's finest Victorian-Italianate facades. Historic Properties is noted as Halifax's favourite waterfront marketplace, offering one-of-a-kind specialty shops, great restaurants and unique events, all with true Nova Scotian flavour! Visit the harbourside boardwalk, Canada's oldest art college and a Visitor Information Centre.
Fairview Cemetery: This cemetery is the final resting place of 121 victims of the Titanic. The graves can be easily located in a graceful arc of granite tombstones. One grave - marked J. Dawson - attracts particular attention from recent visitors. It's not Jack, the fictional Minnesota artist in the blockbuster film, however, but James Dawson, a coal trimmer from Ireland. Nineteen other victims are buried in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery and 10 in the Baron de Hirsch Jewish Cemetery.
