Credit Certificates and Diplomas

 

Certificate in Human Resource Management

Saint Mary's is pleased to offer this Certificate, which has been developed in cooperation with professionals in Human Resource Management.  It has been offered for over 30 years, and prepares students for the Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation.  Students should be aware that as of 2011, a bachelor's degree will be one of the requirements for the CHRP designation.

Students may complete this Certificate without completing a degree.  Students with courses from previous post-secondary study will be assessed according to the advanced standing procedures of the University (Academic Regulation 20).  To be awarded the Certificate, at lease twelve (12) credit hours of the compulsory courses and twelve (12) hours from the electives must be completed at Saint Mary's University.  The most current information is provided in the Academic Calenda r, under the Human Resource Management section.

Certificate in Financial Instrument Analysis

The Certificate in Financial Instrument Analysis is designed to meet the demand for skilled labour in the financial services sector. Capital markets, and the financial instruments traded in them, have become increasingly complex, creating the need for advanced knowledge of world capital markets and complex financial instruments.

There has been an increasing demand among the accounting profession for more specialized knowledge of financial instruments.  The certificate will also be of interest to students intending to pursue an accounting designation, but who desire more advanced knowledge of financial instruments than what is currently available through existing universities or professional association curricula .

The program uses a combination of finance and accounting courses to provide graduates with skills necessary for courses in a wide range of jobs in the financial services sector.

Admission Requirements

Current Bachelor of Commerce students : At least 45 credit hours of undergraduate study must have been completed, along with a minimum CGPA of 2.0.  Formal application must be made to the Office of the B. Comm Program.

Requirements for Certificate Completion

The Certificate in Financial Instrument Analysis can be completed in conjunction with a Bachelor of Commerce or as a stand alone certification for those seeking professional development in their disciplinary areas. 

Students must choose to pursue either the Accounting (CFIA) or Financial Stream (CFIF).  Both streams consist of 12 courses each.   Students must attain a minimum GPA of 2.0 on the required courses.

Certificate in the Mathematical Sciences for Education

The Certificate is intended to provide holders of a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with a broad background in mathematics, statistics, and computing science, enabling them to teach high school mathematics courses effectively.

Teachers who complete the program will have a deep understanding of the various contexts in which their own university-bound students will use that mathematics.

A teaching methods course is an integral part of the program.

Admission Requirements

B.Ed. (or equivalent) required, Grade 12 pre-calculus mathematics (at least) or equivalent.  Students must register in a program before starting any courses.

Requirements for Certificate Completion

Students must complete 30 credit hours. 

* Where the student has already obtained credit for one or more of these courses (or equivalents) as part of a program leading to an earlier certification by the NS Department of Education, MATH or CSCI courses numbered 1200 or above and acceptable to the Department of Mathematics and Computing Science may be substituted.

Students must achieve a minimum grade of C in all courses forming part of the certificate (cumulative quality point average of 2.00).  All courses must normally be taken at Saint Mary's University (with some exceptions – please contact Department of Mathematics and Computing Science). 

Students intending to use this program to obtain a license upgrade (or other professional certification) must obtain prior written approval from the appropriate authorities (Registrar for Teacher Certification).  Students are responsible for obtaining this approval.

Certificate in Atlantic Canada Studies

The Certificate in Atlantic Canada Studies is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to develop a more nuanced understanding of the region.

  • Attractive for both local and international students, as the course improved knowledge of local culture that shapes and surrounds us, and also provides a valuable educational option for those travelling abroad

  • Applicants must have completed 30 credit hours of undergraduate study at an accredited university, or must show a demonstrated interest in the field

The Certificate in Chinese Studies is designed to provide linguistic, cultural and practical knowledge to persons interested in studying about, or working in China.

The program is intended for undergraduate students, persons already holding degrees in any discipline, and also mature students with relevant work experience.

Diploma in Forensic Sciences

Forensic Sciences encompasses the methodology and interpretation of data collected in the investigation of deaths, or other events, which could be criminal in nature. In Canada, police forces are regularly involved in forensic investigations, but there are others (e.g., medical personnel, dentists, biologists, criminologists and anthropologists), who are interested in, or can benefit from training in forensic sciences.

This program gives students a strong grounding in various science disciplines that form the basis of techniques used in forensic investigations (provided through introductory and specialty courses offered from Departments in the Science Faculty). Students may broaden their knowledge by choosing from a list of complementary course offered by departments in the other Faculties (e.g., anthropology, sociology). Experts in forensic techniques will expose students to the application knowledge, primarily through the application of Forensic Techniques courses. This diploma program consists of 60 credit hours that will need to be completed.

Admission to this program is by permission of the Program Coordinator (Dr. Colleen Barber, Biology) in consultation with members of the Forensic Sciences Executive. Students must submit an application by May 1st.

For members of the RCMP (police officers) or those having work experience related to forensic science: You do not need to have an undergraduate degree or previous university course, but you do need to apply for admittance to the University. Along with application, please include any official college/university transcripts, a brief statement describing reasons fro choosing the Diploma in Forensic Sciences programs, and note any work-related experience or goals.

Requirements for Certificate Completion

Certificate in Linguistics

This certificate provides an opportunity to explore the structure and function of languages and how their systematic nature makes human communication possible.

It is designed to provide a foundation in linguistics to complement study in related fields such as:

  • Language teaching
  • Anthropology
  • Sociology
  • Business
  • Computer Study

Admission Requirements

This program is intended primarily for students already holding a degree (any discipline)

Formal application required for admission.

For students taking this certificate while completing a bachelor’s degree, approval from Coordinator for Linguistics must be granted.

Requirements for Certificate Completion

Students must complete 30 credit hours, 15 of these 30 must be completed at Saint Mary’s University. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 required for certificate to be granted. All students must take LING 1200 and also select 6 credit hours from LING 2310, 2320, 2330 and 2340. The remaining 18 credit hours are to be selected from other courses that can be found in subsection d under “Linguistics” in the 2009-2009 Academic Calendar.
