SMIT AND RANCOURT NAMED HUSKIES TOP ATHLETES

Female Athlete of the Year

Female Athlete of the Year - Kerri Smit with Kathy Mullane

The Department of Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the 2008/09 Major Award recipients.  Kerri Smith (Volleyball) and Marc Rancourt (Hockey) were named the top female and male athletes at tonight’s Athletic Awards Banquet.

Smit is a 2nd year left side hitter from Shubenacadie, NS.  She led the conference and the country in kills and points and was named the AUS Most Valuable Player.  She earned a 2nd team CIS All-Canadian nomination for her accomplishments.

Rancourt, a 4th year forward from Gloucester, ON was the league and the country’s leading scorer with 57 points and becomes the 5th all-time Saint Mary’s scorer.  He was named the AUS and CIS Player of the Year and also received a 1st team All-Canadian.  Rancourt was also the league’s nominee for the Randy Gregg Award which combines academic and athletic achievements.  This evening Marc also received the team’s MVP award and the President’s Award, which is rewarded for academic and athletic accomplishment.

Male Rookie of the Year – Jahmeek Murray, Football – 1st year, Mississauga, ON

President Award Female – Christena MacRae, Volleyball – 4th year, Lower Sackville, NS

President Award Male – Marc Rancourt, Hockey – 4th year, Gloucester, ON

Unsung Hero Award – Scott Brophy, Hockey – 3rd year, Torbay, NL

Manager of the Year – Paul Mason, Football

Student Therapist Award – Ashley Merrithew, Hockey

Outstanding Community Volunteer – Annelie Vandenberg
