Update on the CIS Championships in Edmonton Alberta, Mar 10-14
The SMU women’s and the SMU men’s teams travelled to the University of Alberta in Edmonton last week to compete in the CCA/CIS National Curling Championships that were held in the Saville Centre – the home of the gold metal Olympic team of Kevin Martin. In 2009 both Saint Mary’s teams lost in the finals. This year, the men’s team (skip - Kendal Thompson, 2nd year commerce, mate -Travis Stone, 2nd year commerce, second - Matt Bordian, 2nd year science and lead - Morgan Armstrong, 4th year commerce) failed to make the cross-over games.
The women’s team (skip – Marie Christianson, 4th year commerce, mate – Christina Black, 2nd year commerce, second - Katie Thomas, 4th year arts, lead – Julia Williams, 1st year commerce) finished first in their pool and lost to Regina in an extra end in the final. The winner of the championship represents Canada at the 2011 FISU World Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey from January 27 to February 6th, 2011. The men’s team will be represented by Queen’s University.
Marie Christianson was also named the first team all Canadian at the skip position. Bill Fletcher

2009 Update
The Provincial University Curling Playdowns held last weekend (February, 2009) in Antigonish.
The SMU Ladies Team won with two wins on Saturday over the host ST FX Ladies and have brought home the provincial trophy for the University!
The SMU boys won the first two games vs StFX #1 and Dal and were in the double bracket with two chances to claim the title on Sunday. Unfortunately they lost both games vs a strong St FX #1 team and ended up as runner up for this year.
Our Ladies team will now go on to the CIS / CCA Nationals in Montreal, March 24-29/09 to try to capture the National Title as the Nova Scotia representative.

2008 Update
Canadian University Championships were held at the University of Waterloo in Guelph, Ontario from March 12-16, 2008

About The Team
Saint Mary’s University has a long history of academic and athletic excellence. The Saint Mary’s University curling club was formed for the first time in the fall of 2007 for the purpose of participating in the national championships. Prior to 2007, a ‘un-official’ national championship was held and most of the teams that participated in this ‘un-official’ national were from the west and Ontario. As word spread, more teams from the east became interested and in 2007 a team from Acadia entered the championship held in Winnipeg. In 2008, CIS and the CCA joined forces to sponsor a national championship to determine a team to represent Canada in the World University games.

Due to the short time available and there is no ‘University ‘curling league, the teams are selected on their provincial and national experience. The very least amount of experience that any team member had was provincial experience and the back end of both the men’s and the women’s teams had been to the nationals.
