The reigning ACAA coach of the year for women’s basketball is coming to Saint Mary’s.

The Department of Athletics and Recreation at Saint Mary’s University is pleased to announce that Scott Munro has been appointed head coach of the Huskies women’s basketball team. The appointment is effective July 1.

“It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I enter into my new position as head coach of the Saint Mary's women's basketball team,” said Munro. “Saint Mary's has always felt like home to me.”

Munro is a graduate of Saint Mary's and spent nine years as an assistant coach for both the women's and men's basketball programs at the University.

For the past five seasons, Munro coached the women’s basketball team at The University of King’s College, and he was recently named head coach and program coordinator for the Nova Scotia women’s basketball team that will compete at the Canada Games in 2009.

Munro’s other head coaching experience includes leading the Nova Scotia Juvenile boys and girls provincial teams, the Halifax West High School women’s team and the New Brunswick Juvenile Men’s Development provincial team.

Earlier this year, he was named coach of the year by the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA), after leading the King’s College Blue Devils to 17-4, second-place finish during the regular season. He was also nominated as national coach of the year by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA).

“I hope to take the lessons I’ve learned from my previous experience at Saint Mary’s, as well as my other coaching endeavours, to lead the Huskies women's program into national prominence,” said Munro.

In addition to his coaching experience, Munro also served as head clinician at Saint Mary’s University Camp of Champions, co-director of Saint Mary’s University Women’s Basketball League, a member of the Nova Scotia Provincial Team Advisory Committee, and a clinician for women’s basketball camps at the University of Maine and the University of Connecticut.
