Stamps put faith in overlooked draft gem
Karl McCartney looks to bolster linebacking corps
CALGARY - It was shortly before the Canadian Football League draft, and Karl McCartney was at home in the Bahamas, surfing the Internet.
The 22-year-old linebacker was coming off a solid season with the Saint Mary's University Huskies, and despite not being invited to the CFL's Evaluation Camp, he fully expected to be picked on May 2, so he was checking out TSN's Duane Forde, quite rightly considered the authoritative voice on such matters, and his position-by-position rankings of draft-eligible players.

Saint Mary’s Huskies defensive back Saleem Borhot beat the numbers Sunday.
Unrated in the top 15 for Sunday’s CFL draft, Borhot became the top AUS player selected when the Edmonton Eskimos used their second-round pick, 12th overall, to snag the Calgary native. |

Sumarah becomes the 3rd SMU Head Coach to win the award
QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – Saint Mary’s University’s Steve Sumarah is the 2009 recipient of the Frank Tindall trophy as the coach of the year in CIS football, presented by Coaches of Canada.
A first-time winner, Sumarah was honoured Friday morning during the CIS Coach of the Year Breakfast at Palais des arts. |

Dinos run past Huskies, to face Queen's for Vanier Cup
The No. 2 Calgary Dinos are headed to their first national championship game since 1995 after dominating the Saint Mary's Huskies with a 38-14 victory Saturday in the Uteck Bowl.
Calgary (10-1) will play No. 4 Queen's (10-1), who upset top-ranked Laval 33-30 in the Mitchell Bowl, in the Desjardins Vanier Cup Saturday, Nov. 28 at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City, live on TSN and Radio-Canada (12 p.m. local, 10 a.m. MT). It will be the first meeting between the Dinos and Gaels since the 1983 Vanier Cup, which Calgary won 31-21 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. |

Rested Jones ready to run
The AUS may have done the Saint Mary’s Huskies a favour when they docked all-conference tailback Devon Jones two games for striking a St. Francis Xavier X-Men player in a regular-season game on Oct. 23.
Jones bit his lip and took his punishment, choosing not to give his version of events, but pledging to be the best teammate he could be through his two games on the sidelines, which included last week’s 31-22 Loney Bowl win over the X-Men. |

SMU Top's list with 10 All-Stars
November 11, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce the 2009 football offensive and defensive all-star teams as selected by the conference's four head coaches following regular season play.
The first place Saint Mary's Huskies (7-1) led the list of selections announced today, claiming a total of ten all-star positions while the second place StFX X-Men (6-2, 1-0 playoffs) had nine players named as conference all-stars. The Acadia Axemen (2-6) and Mount Allison Mounties (0-8) each took home four all-stars each. |

Palardy sets record with four field goals in victory over Acadia
TRURO’S Justin Palardy has another AUS football record thanks to four field goals and the Saint Mary’s Huskies are rolling into the post-season.
The CIS No. 6 Huskies clipped the Acadia Axemen 21-7 Friday night before a drowsy 1,800 at Huskies Stadium for a 7-1 regular-season record and a seven-game winning streak. The Axemen enter the playoffs 2-6. |

Reigning champion Laval opens 2009 season at No. 1
SMU Comes in at #5
OTTAWA (CIS) – For the fifth consecutive year, the Laval Rouge et Or open the Canadian Interuniversity Sport season as the top-ranked football team in the nation.
The defending Vanier Cup champions, who led all nine CIS polls last fall and have topped 49 of the past 50 national rankings dating back to the start of the 2005 campaign, earned the 54 available first-place votes and 1,710 points in the inaugural Top 10 this season. The Western Ontario Mustangs, reigning OUA champs and Vanier Cup finalists last year, are ranked second with 1,543 points, followed by Calgary, the defending Canada West champs (1,168), Saskatchewan (1,125) and AUS champion Saint Mary’s (1,108). |

The defending AUS champion Saint Mary’s Huskies have announced their 2009 football recruiting class, which includes former Canadian junior player of the year Tristan Jones of Edmonton.
Jones, the son of former CFL star Milson Jones, will join younger brother Devon in the Huskies backfield this fall. The brothers, both tailbacks, are former teammates with the Edmonton Wildcats. |

"Dream Team" coaching staff wrap up second annual Skills Camp
(Wolfville, NS) The second annual Atlantic University Sport Football Skills Camp wrapped up the May long weekend on Monday morning with a live scrimmage, observed by talented collection of AUS Football coaches including Head Coaches from all four AUS football programs and several guest High School coaches.
The camp that combines the coaching talents from all four AUS football schools including Mount Allison, StFX, Acadia and Saint Mary's is in it's infancy, yet has attracted more than it's inagural year last May. |

CFL Canadian Draft
SMU's Darcy Brown goes 6th in CFL Draft
OTTAWA (CIS) – University of Alberta offensive tackle Simeon Rottier of Westlock, Alta., was selected first overall in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft on Saturday, part of a record day that saw 38 CIS players drafted including the top seven picks.

The 38 selections – 79.1 per cent of the 48 players drafted – and the seven picks to open the draft are both records for CIS football since 1970. A previous high of 35 CIS student-athletes had been chosen in 2004, while the first six selections in 1983 were from CIS schools.
The seven players picked in the opening round rank third on the CIS list since 1970. Eight CIS athletes were drafted in the first round in both 1970 and 1972, when nine players were selected in every round.
