The drive for five straight AUS women’s soccer titles is off to a good start for the four-time defending champion Cape Breton Capers.

Jessica MacDermid, who posted 10 shutouts during the regular season and playoffs last year, earned her second in as many days to start the season as the Capers blanked the host Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-0 in an Atlantic university women’s soccer matinee at Huskies Stadium.

Alyssa Budhoo, Alyssa Kavanaugh and Hannah Abenheimer each scored for the Capers, who played to a scoreless draw with the Dalhousie Tigers in their season opener on Saturday.

It was the first game of the season for SMU.

In other games, the Moncton Aigles Bleues blanked the Memorial Sea-Hawks 1-0 in Moncton, N.B. and the host Mount Allison Mounties dumped the UNB Varsity Reds 5-1.

In men’s action:

Huskies 0, Capers 0 — At Huskies Stadium, goals were hard to come by for Saint Mary’s and Cape Breton.

Chris Tournidis posted the shutout for Cape Breton while Sean Harvey turned the trick for the host side.

It was the Huskies’ season opener. CBU’s record stands at 0-1-1.

In other games, Memorial edged host Moncton 2-1 and UNB and Mount Allison played to a 1-1 draw in Sackville, N.B.
