The Saint Mary’s Huskies women’s basketball team has landed two of the top available recruits of the Nova Scotia high school ranks.
Bedford’s Laura Langille and Dartmouth’s Samantha Martin have both committed to Saint Mary’s for the fall of 2011.
Langille is a forward from the C.P. Allen Cheetahs and Martin a guard with the Auburn Drive Eagles. Both are metro high school all-stars.
Saint Mary’s head coach Scott Munro coached both players for two summers on provincial age-group teams, most recently the under-17 team. He said both players were recruited heavily in the Maritimes and beyond.
"They are both great kids and they both love to play basketball, which was one of the biggest attractions for sure," Munro said Tuesday. "They are gym rats who like working on their games and they are good students as well."
Munro thinks both players should be able to step into the AUS and make an immediate impact.
"Laura is a post player with the ability to step outside, but she’s also got a polished back-to-the-basket game," said Munro. "Samantha is one of the top pure shooters around. She can really shoot the three and at six feet tall she’ll present some challenges for defences."
• Acadia men’s head coach Steve Baur has announced five new players for 2011-12.
The list includes Shaquille Smith of North Preston, forward Brad States of Bathurst, N.B., point guard Sean Stoqua of Ottawa, centre Rhys Larry of Brockville, Ont., and guard Thomas Johnston of Midland, Ont.
The six-foot-three Smith of the Auburn Drive Eagles was a member of the Nova Scotia Canada Games team that won a silver medal in 2009.
"He is one of the top Maritime prospects this year," Baur said in a media release. "He has great athleticism and length on the defensive end while his versatility will be an asset we will enjoy for the next four years."
The six-foot-six States, a key player on the New Brunswick provincial team last summer, is the son of Glenn States, a former Acadia player from Nova Scotia. Larry’s sister, Charlotte, plays for the Axewomen basketball team.
