Saint Mary’s University is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Sweetapple as the new Head Coach of the Huskies’ women’s soccer team.
Sweetapple is a former director of the National Training Center (Atlantic) and has extensive experience coaching soccer at the elite level in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. In recent years, he has coached various Nova Scotia girls’ teams to five Atlantic championships and three fourth-place finishes at national championships.
As director of the National Training Center (Atlantic) from 2005 until 2008, Sweetapple worked with top male and female youth soccer players all throughout Atlantic Canada, and joined elite youth soccer teams at international competitions. He also oversaw the daily training regime of Nova Scotia players.
“We’re thrilled Mark has agreed to bring his experience and perspective to the Huskies,” said Steve Sarty, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Saint Mary’s. “Mark’s experience at the provincial and national level will help our women’s soccer program take the next step. His understanding of athlete development, communication skills and his extensive knowledge of the player pool in Atlantic Canada will help Saint Mary’s continue to recruit and retain the top women’s soccer players in Canada.”
As a player, Sweetapple was an AUAA All-star in 1996 with Mount Allison University, played in the Manchester Football League from 1997 until 1999, and more recently, played as a member of Halifax City/Celtics Senior Men’s team that won five provincial championships in six years between 2003 and 2008.
Sweetapple graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2000 and is currently a teacher and IB Coordinator at Cole Harbor District High School. Sweetapple also has a Masters in Organic Chemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Allison University.
