Lisa Jordan’s Saint Mary’s Huskies ousted her sister Lesley’s Dalhousie Tigers from the Atlantic university women’s hockey playoffs on Friday afternoon.
Kori Cheverie collected two goals and two assists as the Huskies won an 8-6 barnburner over the Tigers in second-day action at the conference playoffs in Moncton.
No. 3 SMU will play the second-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Women this afternoon to determine who will advance to Sunday’s final. Fifth-ranked Dalhousie, 6-0 losers to St. F.X. on Thursday, has been eliminated.
"It was like a last shot wins," Lisa Jordan said on Friday afternoon. "(Dalhousie) had a really tough game yesterday against St. F.X.
"Dal played much better offensively today. We just kept our finger in the dam as much as we could. We managed to do that long enough."
"We had a little bit of playoff jitters because we hadn’t had a playoff game yet," the Huskies bench boss added.
"Dal had already gone through that experience. We were a little bit nervous all game long. Clearly we will have to be much better defensively for us to compete tomorrow against St. F.X."
Huskies’ player of the game Jenna Currie had a goal and two assists for the winners. Sarah Maynard tallied twice and Melissa Young, Kaitlyn Abbass and Kyla Thurston added single markers. Lauren McCusker had three assists.
Jocelyn LeBlanc, Dal’s player of the game, netted a goal and three assists. Fielding Montgomery, Kaitlyn McNutt, Robyn Nicholson, Robin Mullen and Laura Shearer also scored for the Tigers.
The odds may be stacked against SMU for today’s contest, but Jordan said "anything can happen in a playoff tournament."
"We have had some close (games) against St. F.X. lately but they still had our number," Jordan said.
"It’s hard to say how it will go for us tomorrow but we’ll give it a good shot."
The No. 4 St. Thomas Tommies defeated the sixth-seeded UPEI Panthers 5-1 in the late playoff game Friday.
The Tommies will take on the top-ranked Moncton Aigles Bleues this evening.
The championship game is Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
