Huskies name McLean as defensive coordinator
Saint Mary’s Huskies head coach Steve Sumarah confirmed Thursday that former Canadian Football League player Mike McLean has joined the football program as defensive coordinator.
McLean, who went to the University of Alberta, played seven years in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos and captured a Grey Cup. He went on to be a schoolteacher and football coach.
"He’s a guy who has won wherever he has been," Sumarah said. "That was important.
"And the fact he has contacts out West for recruiting purposes, that always helps. He’s a fiery guy. I think he’s going to bring some life to our defence."
McLean has been the head coach of the Edmonton Junior Huskies program since 2001 and guided the team to back-to-back Canadian Bowl Championships, beginning in 2004.
