Saint Mary's Receiver Brown, makes CFL
June 28, 2009
Former Saint Mary’s Huskies receiver Darcy Brown has cracked the opening-day roster of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a fullback.
Brown, a surprise first-round pick in the April draft of Canadian talent, is one of two AUS graduates to crack the 46-man opening-day roster as a rookie. Acadia free safety Elliott Richardson, who was undrafted after suffering a serious arm injury and missing much of last season, stuck as a free agent with the Edmonton Eskimos.
The Ticats will have three former Huskies with Brown, wide receiver Dave Stala and defensive back Marc Beswick. A former draft pick of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Beswick signed as a free agent in Hamilton on Saturday.
Former NFL offensive lineman Steve Morley of Halifax, a former SMU player, is in Winnipeg and St. Francis Xavier grad Mike McCullough, a linebacker, in Saskatchewan.
Ex-Acadia offensive lineman Godfrey Ellis is in Calgary, where former X-Men offensive lineman Derek Armstrong is on the injured list and fellow X-Men offensive lineman Steve Myddelton on the practice roster. Former SMU linebacker Tim St. Pierre returns to Edmonton.
First-round pick Matt Carter of Acadia landed on the practice roster of the B.C. Lions.
Offensive lineman Gordon Sawler of St. F.X., a Dartmouth native, was a late cut of the Toronto Argos. Other late casualties were former St. F.X. defensive back Sean Manning (Hamilton), SMU defensive back Joel Lipinski (Saskatchewan) and Acadia offensive lineman Adam Rogers (Edmonton). Lipinski has been added to Saskatchewan’s developmental squad.
The regular season begins Wednesday with Toronto at Hamilton and Montreal visiting Calgary.
