SMU's Haywood captures Male Athlete of the Week

Joey Haywood of the Saint Mary’s Huskies men’s basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 10th, 2010. Haywood, a third year guard from Vancouver, BC averaged 22.0 points in a pair of home wins this past weekend over the UPEI Panthers. In Saturday’s 79-68 victory, Haywood scored 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor and added six assists, four rebounds and three steals. In Sunday’s 90-70 win over the Panthers, Joey netted 17 points and added five assists, four rebounds and three steals. The two wins improved SMU’s record to 6-2 this season, including a perfect 4-0 at home, and moved them into third place in the Atlantic conference standings. Haywood, an AUS first team all-star last season, is currently leading the conference in scoring with an average of 22.5 points per game. He also ranks second in field goal percentage (59.5 per cent), third in assists (5.50 per game) and third in steals (2.63 per game).
