Question: Hi! I was looking at taking a semester off to re-charge myself then registering for both summer classes and the fall of 2016 when the portal opens. I am aware of how this will impact my studies and have outlined the courses I need to take at what time. My question is: how do I go about taking a semester off? Does it involve simply dropping all classes? Or do I have to visit the service centre or see an academic advisor to let them know my plan? Cheers!

Answer: Hi there! Sounds like you already have a great plan in motion. To take a semester off, ensure that you drop all of your courses and have no outstanding fee. If you are looking to leave residence, there may be quit ea hefty fine for leaving through half of the year though! You can feel free to email the Service Centre and they will make a note on your account that you will be away for a semester. Be aware that if you take over a year off from studies, you will have to reapply to SMU as a returning student! A semester will not hinder your student status, however an entire year will. Best of luck and enjoy your time off!
