Question: I am an international student coming to Canada for the first time in the fall for the graduate program at SMU. I would like advice on where to stay. Off campus or on campus? I heard that off campus is cheaper but its hard looking for a place because I cant see it in person. What's your take?

Answer: Hi there! I think staying in SMU's residence for at least one year will help you get used to the culture here and also to make tons of friends. Off campus isn't necessarily cheaper unless you get a good deal. Don't forget that you have to pay for water, electricity and wifi separately from the actual rent! While in Residence, everything is in one bill which is connected to your SMU account. Therefore, you can pay for tuition and rent from one account. Safety is also taken very seriously in residence. Resident Assistants (RAs), Residence Service Officers (RSOs) and Campus Security are all close by. Finally, SMU's buildings are all connected with pedways and tunnels so when winter rolls in, you don't have to go outside in the freezing cold to go to class. Once you are here, you can later check out all the rent deals off campus and choose one that fits your ideal.
