Question: Hey.. I've not seen anywhere that it is mandatory to live on residence as an international student. What i want to know is what it's like to live on residence as compare to renting somewhere nearby? Also, what you think the cost will be living off campus, and is it safe?

Answer: Hi Shannon! It is definitely not mandatory for international students to live in residence! Being an international student and transitioning to university can be a lot to take in, so living in residence can definitely make it easier for you. You have a wide range of options while living in residence, which include being in one of our three different residences, having a roommate or not, being on a predominantly international floor and many more. I have lived and am still living in residence and can say that the residence experience helped me to make new friends from all over the world, be on time for classes and it also helped with my homesickness. I've never lived off campus, but I have a few friends who have lived off campus and the cost all depends on what type of apartment you get, whether or not you share it with others and the location. In terms of safety, again it depends on location etc. However, in residence, there is 24- hour security and regular patrolling done as well as access cards specific to your residence. Many persons prefer residence because you're close to the meal hall, the on-campus gym, friends, classes, downtown, the library etc. However other persons prefer off campus to experience that level of independence. Both options are totally fine and many international students choose the route that they are more comfortable with. Some choose to live in residence for the first few years, then branch out to live off campus in their later years, while others chose to live on campus for their whole tenure at SMU. Both experiences are a bit different, but it all depends on your preference while studying! Hope this helps!
