Question: Hey! I'm surely getting F in one of my Arts electives. I don't want to retake this course because it's the same professor. So, is there any other alternative ? Like, I thought that we're supposed to have 120 credits to graduate with Majors so, if I do an extra Arts elective would the better one be considered over the one that I got F ? Thanks!

Answer: Hi Swetcha, When you fail a course the F will be listed on your transcript. If you retake the same course then the F from before still remains on your transcript, as well as your new mark, but your new mark is what goes into your GPA calculation. Unfortunately you cannot take a different course to replace the F. You can always go talk to your academic advisor about what option (whether to retake the course or not) works best for you. It might be a good idea to sit down with the professor of this course and see what kind of changes you could make a second time around in order to improve your mark if you retake the class! Profs at SMU in my experience are very good at supporting students that are willing to put in the time to improve on their work!
