Question: What is the process of becoming a Teacher's Assistant at SMU?

Answered by: Emma
Answer: I believe that each department may have a slightly different method of hiring Teaching Assistants (i.e. TAs). Being a TA is a great experience and something that you can put on your resume, however before you apply make sure that you have time along with your own classwork to do the marking for a professor. TAing can be a lot of work, depending what kind of course(s) you are assigned to. If you are interested in becoming a TA you should contact the secretary of your department to find out how your department hires TAs and what TA positions are available. You may have to provide a filled out application form and an unofficial transcript. This is largely because you have to have had a high mark in the course or other similar courses in order to TA it a lot of the time. You may want to talk to some of your favourite professors and see if they will be needing TAs for the upcoming semesters.
