Chaplaincy - Student Food Bank
The Chaplaincy Office, with the help of student volunteers, administers a food bank for students and staff at Saint Mary's. It may surprise some people that there is a need for a food bank at a university, but in fact food banks are becoming common at universities across Canada. Tammy, a student who worked the front desk in the chaplaincy office, remembered the first time someone came in to use the food bank while she was working, "I couldn't believe that there would be a need here in Halifax. It really opened my eyes to how things really are."
Last year the foodbank received many donations from different groups on Campus. If you would like to make a donation of food or money, please contact the chaplaincy office. For the most part the foodbank works on a "grocery card" system. Students seeking assistance from the food bank will be seen by Financial Aid who will then refer them to the Chaplaincy Centre where a grocery card will be supplied to those who are in need.
Students may find themselves in a temporary crisis situation and the food bank is here to be of assistance. The food bank is located in the Chaplaincy Office, Room 183 in the Loyola Building. It is open during office hours, Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm. If you would like to volunteer to be involved with the food bank please call us at 420-5502 or email us chaplain@smu.ca
