Building a Faith Community
Saint Mary's University was established by the Roman Catholic Community of Halifax, the Irish Christian Brothers and the Society of Jesus, (Jesuits). Today Saint Mary's is diverse in every respect and remains committed to the pursuit of excellence.
The purpose of Chaplaincy Services at Saint Mary's is to serve, support, and advance the expression, understanding, and celebration of faith and morals in the life of students.
Because of the history of Saint Mary's University the Chaplain is a Catholic. According to the St Mary's University Act of 1970, one of the objects of the University is "to give special emphasis to the Christian tradition and values in higher education." Chaplaincy Services at SMU, however, serves all students. The Chaplain has access to chaplains of different faiths and will be glad to help anyone seeking chaplaincy services.
In some cases students belonging to particular religious traditions have started their own Societies through SMUSA. Currently these include the Navigators, Campus for Christ, Gospel, and the Santamarian Muslim Society. Students who do not have their own Society are encouraged to discuss how Chaplaincy can help their group.
