Learning Strategies

Learning in University

Learning in university is quite different from what you experienced in high school and therefore you are going to have to learn new ways of studying to accommodate the learning experience at university.  Changing your studying habits may feel uncomfortable at first, however like any skill with time and practice they will become second nature.

As a university student you should:

1.     Take responsibility for yourself, your choices and the consequences of those choices, don’t play the blame game, you are an adult.

2.     Don’t let others dictate your priorities, learn how to say no to friends, work etc if it is going to impact your success.

3.     Learn what works best for you when it comes to studying and learning, what are your strengths and what areas need work.

4.     Problem solve when something doesn’t work, for example if you read a chapter in your textbook and can’t recall the information then you need to learn a different strategy.

5.     Keep at it, don’t give up, there is usually always a service on campus to help you.

Active Learning

Active learning is when you are actively engaged in lectures, course work and readings.  It is a learning skill that will help you learn, understand and retain information in university.  Active learning makes the material more meaningful and relevant and therefore easier to recall when you need it.

·         Create questions that you want answered from either your text book or the lecture

·         Use mind mapping and brainstorming to help organize and learn material

·         Discuss the material in study groups

·         Explain the material to someone, this shows understanding and application of knowledge

·         Participate in class discussions

·         Paraphrase the information

·         If you are doing well tutor, teaching someone the material keeps you knowledgeable
