Canadian Statistics: Getting Started

CANSIM [on campus only]
Statistics Canada's CANSIM (Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System) is a multidimensional database featuring over 38 million time series and nearly 3, 000 tables which cover various aspects of social and economic life within Canada.

E-STAT
E-Stat is a database produced specifically for the academic community by Statistics Canada. E-Stat contains approximately 2, 700 tables from CANSIM on various facets of Canada’s society and economy. Statistical data can be presented in the form of maps, graphs or tables and can be manipulated in a variety of other ways.

Canadian Statistics: Frequently Used Sources

Census of Canada 2006 | Census of Canada 2001 | Census of Canada 1996
The census provides population and dwelling counts for each province and territory and for smaller geographic areas such as counties and urban areas. The census also collects information about Canada's demographic, social, and economic characteristics.

2006 Community Profiles | 2001 Community Profiles | 1996 Community Profiles
These profiles provide census data for communities across Canada including villages, towns, cities, counties, Indian reserves, etc. Tabular data includes the following: population and dwelling counts, age characteristics, education, income, occupation, marital status and family characteristics.

Canada Year Book (CYB) | CYB Historical Collection (1867-1967)
First published in 1867, the CYB is a reliable reference guide which features detailed social and economic statistical information and analyses about Canada and its population.

Spending Patterns in Canada: 2006
Annual publication based on data collected from the Survey of Household Spending. Contains expenditures by households for a wide variety of goods and services including food, shelter, child care, transportation, recreation, education, etc.

Historical Statistics of Canada
Compiled jointly by Statistics Canada and the Social Science Federation of Canada, this publication features over 1,000 tables covering the social, economic, and institutional conditions of Canada from the start of Confederation in 1867 to the mid-1970's.

United States Statistics

U.S. Census Bureau

Home of the main U.S. statistical agency. Includes:

  • U.S. Census 2000
  • American Fact Finder - an easy way to search for statistics about population, housing, and social and economic data for cities, towns, states, and other geographies.
  • FedStats - links to official statistics from over 100 federal agencies
  • County & City Data Book – covers data for all U.S. states, cities and counties with a population of 25,000 or more. Data covers a wide range of topics including: agriculture, construction, crime, education, elections, housing, labor force, etc.

Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)

The BEA is responsible for measuring and producing statistics on the economic activity of the United States. Site includes interactive tables relating to national, international and regional economic data, as well as industrial data.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States
Published since 1878, the Statistical Abstract of the United States is an authoritative reference tool, which provides statistical summaries on the social, economic and political organization of the United States. Also serves as a useful guide to other statistical sources and publications.

Historical Statistics of the United States: Earliest Times to the Present
This 5 volume set provides a sweeping statistical history of the United States from colonial times to the present. Historical data series cover a wide range of subject areas including: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, economic sectors, governance and international relations.

EUROSTAT
Statistical office of the European communities. Eurostat provides free access to the latest statistical information on the European Union, its members, and other countries. Topics are grouped around the following themes: regional statistics, economy and finance, population and social conditions, industry, trade, agriculture and fisheries, transport, environment and energy, and science and technology.

  • Includes the EUROSTAT Year Book, which, published annually, provides a comprehensive overview of statistical data collected by the European communities.

UNdata
A database designed by the United Nations Statistics Division which combines several major UN databases and other international organizations into one easy-to-search database. Currently searches over 55 million records on a wide variety of topics including population, industry, trade, and energy.

Organization for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD)
Provides access to OECD statistical databases. Features country statistical profiles, as well as statistical data on a wide range of subjects, including development, finance, labour, health, etc. Customizable tables.

World Development Indicators (WDI)
The World Bank’s annual publication of development statistics for over 150 economies. Data is organized into the following sections: world view, people, environment, economy, states and markets, and global links.

Selected Business & Financial Statistics

Datastream [available only on the guest workstations in the Library]
According to Thomson Financial, it contains: "more than two million instruments, securities and indicators for over 175 countries in 60 markets, up to 50 years of history, and over one hundred million time series."

Dun & Bradstreet's Key Industrial Norms and Ratios [available only on the guest workstations in the Library]
This database provides 3-year industry ratings, in Excel format, grouped into broad categories: solvency, efficiency and profitability. Searchable by SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes which can be determined through a table built into the database. SIC searches only extend to four-digit SICs.

FPinfomart.ca (formerly FinancialPost.com) [on campus only]
The FP Advisor provides industry, financial and security data for over 4,000 public Canadian companies as well as directory listings for another 450,000+.

Global Vantage [available only on the guest workstations in the Library]
The international equivalent to Research Insight, providing similar data for public companies traded on international markets.

International Financial Statistics from the International Monetary Fund [on campus only]
The IMF is an international organization responsible for maintaining and promoting international monetary cooperation across its 185 member countries. The IMF produces time series data on IMF lending, exchange rates, and other economic and financial indicators.

Morningstar [available only on the guest workstations in the Library]
Mutual Fund data, in Access 2000 file format, for a ten-year period.

Research Insight (formerly COMPUSTAT) [available only on the guest workstations in the Library]
Provides annual and quarterly company balance sheet information on approximately 20,000 firms, active and inactive, as well as about 1,000 Canadian companies. Data fields include major items from the financial statements, selected footnotes, plus measures of stock performance. In all, several hundred variables are present for every company. Includes annual financials as reported for 15 years, quarterlies for 5 years, segment data for 7 years, and monthly market data for 5 years. Also includes economic sector and industry sector data. Updated annually.

TSX E-Review [on campus only]
Database includes: daily and monthly Toronto Stock Exchange trading information about specific securities; information on "price adjustments" such as dividends, stock splits, recapitalizations, etc.; information on daily and monthly index levels; as well as selected other financial markets information. The database is divided into two parts: common equities and preferred equities.
Note: Current data for the last twelve to eighteen months is not available in the database.
