University Email Services

Faculty/Staff Email

Saint Mary's faculty and staff have moved to a new email service, based on Microsoft Exchange 2010. Your email is now more accessible to you, no matter where you are – at your desk, on the road, at home, or even using a mobile device. In addition, there's a new web-based interface integrated into SMUport.

Exchange 2010 builds on the Microsoft Outlook mail client that many people were already using, so your desktop email environment will continue to be familiar to you. Mail access from SMUport is greatly improved: the Outlook Web Application (OWA) built into Exchange adds a web-based Outlook environment for easy, consistent access when you’re not at your office system. Together, Exchange 2010, OWA and Outlook make up the standard supported email environment for SMU.

For those users who need to use a different email client, Exchange supports standard IMAP access, as well as ActiveSync access for mobile devices.

Move to Exchange Calendar Services

With faculty and staff now actively using Microsoft Exchange for e-mail, the time has come to move to its calendar service as well. On December 14, 2011, the university calendar services will formally change to Microsoft Exchange.

Exchange calendar offers real improvements over SMU’s existing service, including:

  • access to email and calendar together, through Outlook or SMUport
  • better control of sharing and delegation
  • much-improved facilities for scheduling meetings
  • Streamlined synchronization with mobile devices:
    • Blackberry users can sync with the Exchange calendar through Outlook via USB cable, and in the coming weeks you'll be able to sync over the air through a campus Blackberry Enterprise Server.
    • devices like the iPhone and iPad can sync directly with the Exchange calendar over the air through ActiveSync.

Legacy Email

Users with legacy email accounts can still access them through SMUport or through a client (such as Outlook) on their computer. These accounts are being phased out, with end-of-life scheduled for October 2015.
