In March 2005, Saint Mary’s University commenced a three-year $25.5 million Science Building Renewal Project. In keeping with the University’s Strategic Directions and Academic Plan, the project will meet the needs of students, staff and faculty of the Sciences through a significant upgrading of the Science Building and its infrastructure.

The scope of the Project includes the modernization of 71,500 square feet of research space in addition to the construction of 22,500 square feet of premium teaching space at the north end of the building. The Science Building houses the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, and Geology along with related programs and services.

The Science Building Renewal Project builds on the Proposed Planning Principles already developed by the University and will meet the following objectives:

  • Renew the building the infrastructure including architectural, mechanical and electrical infrastructure
  • Provide each faculty member with separate research and office space
  • Optimize lab capacity for teaching purposes
  • Optimize research space and capacity,
  • Harmonize with the Atrium Building in function and appearance.

Students, staff and faculty will be able to take full advantage of the renovations as they are completed. The Project will be fully completed by September 2008 with the operational function of as much space as possible being retained throughout the process.
