The University strongly encourages the university community to consider more sustainable forms of transportation such as public transit, walking, biking, or carpooling whenever possible.  Visit HRM SmartTrip to arrange a carpool. The University carpool program allows members of the university community to have access to designated carpool spaces, please see the Parking and Alternative Transportation Policy for more details.

Also, take a look at our Sustainability Webpage for more information on how you can get involved with the sustainability initiatives on campus.

Yes.  The university is committed to sustainability and highly encourages members of the community to carpool whenever possible.

The carpool program:

Two person carpool:

- two people submit the online application together

- the individuals can split the cost of the permit but will NOT get a reserved spot and are NOTpermitted to park in carpool reserved spaces.

- one permit is issued to the carpool group- both vehicles are attached to the carpool group- individuals find a spot in any of the general parking lots.

Three or more person carpool:

- three or more people submit the online application together

- the individuals can split the cost of the permit- one permit is issued to the carpool group

- a reserved spot is assigned to the carpool group.

- all vehicles are attached to the carpool group,

- individuals must show vehicle registration for each vehicle on the application

- the vehicle registration must be for a local address.

 3. I hear there are some changes this year with the application process, what are they?

You heard right, there is a change with the application process.  This year, the applications will be accepted online only.  More information below.

We are also accepting two person carpool groups. NOTE: two person carpool groups do not qualify to park in carpool spaces.  The carpool spaces are reserved for carpool groups with three or more participants.  The advantage of the two person carpool group is you get to share the cost of the parking permit.

Reserved parking is only available in two ways.

The first way:  You can buy a carpool reserved spot.  See the carpool instructions for more details on this program.

The second way:  You may purchase an underground reserved spot. (Underground reserved parking sells out very quickly.)  Parking sales for underground begin August 3, 2011 for students living on campus/in Residence.  On August 17, 2011, parking becomes available to the remainder of the university community (off-campus students, faculty and staff).  The spaces are often sold out well before September.
