CURRENT EXHIBITION

PEOPLE LIKE US:  THE GOSSIP OF COLIN CAMPBELL

12 June - 1 August 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, 11 June, 8:00 pm

Curator’s Talk: Sunday, 25 July, 4pm

Curator: Jon Davies

Organised & circulated by Oakville Galleries

Colin Campbell, a pioneer of Canadian video art, used video to tell stories. Beginning the early 1970s while teaching at Mt Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, he mixed tall tales, rumours, conversations and daydreams from everyday life. Assuming different personas, both male and female, the artist frequently appeared in his own videos, which visitors can watch on more than 20 viewing stations and several projections.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

SCOTT SAUNDERS

28 August - 3 October 2010

Grand Lodge: “Dignity, Sweep, or Elegance with Accommodation, Protection, or a Meeting Hall”

28 August - 3 October 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, 10 September, 8:00 pm

Artist’s Talk: TBA

Curator: Robin Metcalfe

A vast conglomeration of church pews and antique doors, a church organ and symbolic objects fills the Main Gallery space of Saint Mary's University Art Gallery this September. Using artifacts salvaged from Halifax’s former Free Mason’s Hall, Scott Saunders creates an architectural “ruined environment” sectioned into interconnected rooms.  Arising from these scavenged forms is a promise of meaning that mimics the syncretic origins of many systems of ritual and belief. Saunders’ installation both entices and frustrates, its meanings continually coalescing and collapsing in the viewer’s imagination.

A 2008 graduate of NSCAD University, Saunders is one of the most exciting young artists to emerge recently in Halifax. His work featured prominently during Halifax’s first two Nocturne events. In October 2009, the collaborative video installation, Tides’ Comin’ In (with Nikolai Gauer and Wes Johnson), wowed visitors with its facing projections of crashing waves on both sides of Barrington Street. This is Saunders’ first solo exhibition in a public gallery.

KENT MONKMAN

The Triumph of Mischief

16 October- 28 November 2010

Cree artist Kent Monkman offers a Queer perspective on the history of First Nations' encounter with European cultures. The artist proposes an
anthropological investigation of the European male in a silent film
projection within a post-modern teepee and performs in the glamourous drag persona of Miss Chief Share Eagle Testickle. An accomplished painter, Monkman also recreates romantic 19th-century Beaux-Arts landscapes of North America, re-imaging the presence of "cowboys and Indians" within this wilderness idyll.
