Academic Coaching

Regardless of whether you are in your first year, or close to completing your degree, you can always learn new strategies and develop habits that will lead to success as a student and in life, in general.

In many situations, the factors that interfere with students achieving their full potential are not related to course content, but to the approach students take toward their academics. The Student Success Coordinator provides one on one, individualized Academic Coaching, open to all Saint Mary's students.

Academic Coaching is an interactive process in which students are able to talk about their academic concerns, discuss current approaches, and decide on helpful changes based on a discussion of effective success strategies. It provides an opportunity to set academic goals and build the skills necessary to succeed in your university career and beyond.

Students will work toward developing success strategies in the following areas as needed:

  • Time Management & Goal Setting
  • Stress Management & Mindfulness
  • Planning & Organization
  • Overcoming Procrastination
  • Communicating with Professors
  • Presentation Skils
  • Exam Preparation & Test Taking
  • Note Taking
  • Active Reading

NOTE:  Academic Coaching is NOT tutoring or personal counselling.

Depending on your particular concerns, Stress Management may result from ineffective time management and organizational skills. Stress can be minimized by developing skills in this area, including goal setting, prioritization, scheduling and overcoming procrastination. Stress can also be managed by making healthier lifestyle choices, learning how to respond to situations in different ways, challenging beliefs that relate to stress and developing practices that encourage emotional wellness, bringing about more balance in your life.
