Co-operative Education

What is Co-operative Education?

Co-operative Education is a method of learning in which students alternate formal academic studies with paid work terms. Companies or institutions employ these students in projects related to their academic field. This system is becoming increasingly popular worldwide because of the benefits it provides for both students and their employers.

Saint Mary's University Co-operative Education Program is an example of a university working with industry and government to bring a hands-on aspect to the education of our students.

Most Co-op students spend an additional six months to one year to obtain their degree with Co-operative Education experience. They have the advantage of adding practical work experience to their resume.

Saint Mary's offers a team approach in which Co-op staff and academic advisors work with employers and students to ensure all participants gain maximum benefit from the program.

Co-op Employment Development Officers monitor the student's progress during their work terms and ensure both the employer and the student complete an evaluation at the end of their work term.

The Co-op Education Program has many benefits for both students and employers!
