The Faculty of Arts programs at Saint Mary's educates students not only in their chosen subject matter, but also emphasizes and develops the skills needed for today's professional and the workforce of tomorrow.

All services within Career Services are free of charge, except some formal assessments, as administered by the Career Counsellor.
Arts degrees allow you to get research roles, policy and planning positions and match your interests to your careers. The degrees teach the topics in a holistic fashion and leave you in the driver's seat when planning your future directions.
Regardless of the degree area, employers look for Arts graduates because of their ability to:
- have a comprehensive view of the issues involved in the social impact of change in society
- repackage information to match various audiences
- do comprehensive research
- formulate and substantiate arguments
- have an open-ended mind set about how to solve problems
- use creativity to improve procedures and methods
- transfer experiences in other areas to their jobs regardless of some of the many differences
Introduction to occupations and career paths through our 101 series
- An introduction to the subject matter: what it does, and how that knowledge is used in career development.
- Job titles that can be gained thorough the successful completion of that major and others that are possible with graduate work or other certification
- Associations related to that discipline
- Some graduate school background

Transferable skills typically gained through work in an Arts program are:
- Communication skills with the focus on expressing ideas, listening and relating to others and writing skills
- Research skills
- Computer abilities
- Creative and exploratory skills
- Background knowledge for a range of jobs and careers
Having a university degree is one ingredient toward gaining many of the professional jobs people desire. The ability to follow through on long range goals, use discretion and develop confidence in decision making are skills employers wish to have among the people they recruit, and university degrees show the ability to follow through with goals and develop professional skills.
