Centre for Academic and Instructional Development - Academic Integrity
Instances of plagiarism on North American campuses received a great
deal of media attention over the past few years. This publicity sparked
discussion and debate on many Canadian campuses about the root causes
of these activities and about the roles and responsibilities of faculty,
staff and students in dealing with this and other issues of academic
misconduct.
Saint Mary’s responded by providing a number of avenues for
discussion, identification of concerns and sharing of ideas, including:
- The
formation of a sub-committee of the Quality of Teaching Committee,
the Sub-Committee on Academic Integrity, fall 2001,
- A series
of articles and workshops on Academic Integrity for faculty,
staff and students,
- Participation (February 2003)
in an online survey – a Canadian
project aimed at learning more about the attitudes and actions
of university students and faculty, and
- A
report on the analysis of data from the Saint Mary’s
student and faculty surveys.
The report on the Canadian project
in its entirety has been made available to the university community. See Report on AI Survey.
